DO Cava/ DO Emporda Catalunya
The 14th Century Castle of Perelada is situated in the eponymous village North of Barcelona in the
region of Emporda. Wine production in the region can be dated back to the 5th Century BC and the
library of Castillo Perelada has records of wine production in the cellars of Castillo Perelada dating
back to the Fifteenth Century AD and they are still used today.
Primarily a Cava house, Castillo Perelada never the less make a range of table wines from fruit grown
within the Emporda/Costa Brava region which lies within the wider Catalunya region. The northern
boundary of the region meets the border of France and the southern boundary is the Mediterranean
Sea. Therefore the soils and microclimates vary considerably – from coastal plains to steep hills
which in turn allows a wide range of varieties to be grown successfully and many French varieties are
included in the mix. The Mediterranean climate in this area is markedly influenced by the Tramontona
wind which can reach speeds of up to 120km per hour.
